The Countdown Begins!

Some last-minute considerations for the final days leading to Mix It Up!

Just over a week to go! Are you panicking? Don’t. We have found that Mix It Up at Lunch events generally go off well, even if there are a few hitches along the way. Consider any last-minute hurdles as learning opportunities—a chance for student organizers to understand the complexities of planning a major event.

Here are a couple of last-minute things to consider:

Publicity: Is your event being prominently displayed on calendars, in morning announcements, through posters and fliers and on websites? Have you contacted local media to invite them to cover the event? TV, print and online journalists often have a real interest in covering stories about young people. Here’s a press release template you can complete and send to local media outlets.

Batteries: Sounds silly, but make sure to check the batteries on digital cameras and audio and video recorders. Are they charged and ready to go? One of the best ways to capture the success of Mix It Up is to have a couple of roving photographers or videographers approaching students and asking about their experiences with the event. (Share your images with us via Facebook or Twitter—just make sure you get student and family permission first.)

Fun: Remember, although the topic is serious, the goal is fun. Do something nice for the key organizers this week (gift certificates for ice cream, movie passes, etc.), thanking them in advance for all their hard work. If there’s some small setback in the days leading up to the event, remember to breathe—and smile. Life isn’t without complication; humor and flexibility can get us through.

And remember: This wouldn’t have happened without you. So do something nice for yourself, too. You’ve earned it!

Mix It Up at Lunch Day is Oct. 29!
