An SPLC team, including staff members from Teaching Tolerance, led a two-day student leadership camp this week in Sandy, Utah. Nearly 100 students from the four Canyons School District high schools participated in a myriad of activities exploring identity and their understanding of themselves. Students learned how they can positively impact the school experience for students from different backgrounds and developed a greater understanding of race, culture and ethnicity. Working in dialogue groups, students discussed the role of student leadership in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus climate. As a culminating activity, students wrote letters to themselves in which they articulated their leadership goals and personal plans for creating a better school environment for everyone. The letters will be delivered to students the first month of school.
