The Truth about American Muslims Online Now

[2]Teaching Tolerance proudly endorses “What is the Truth about American Muslims? Questions and Answers [2].” This publication, jointly produced by the Religious Freedom Education Project and the Interfaith Alliance Islamic Understanding, answers 27 frequently asked questions about Islam as it is practiced and lived in the United States. It can be found on the Teaching Tolerance website.

One of the founding ideals of the United States is religious tolerance. The right to freely practice one’s religion – without fear of persecution – is guaranteed by the First Amendment.

For the more than 2.6 million Muslims in the United States, however, this essential freedom is exercised at great risk.  After Sept. 11, 2001, incidents of violence, discrimination and bullying have become commonplace for Muslims, including for Muslim students.

Misunderstanding – of the role of mosques, jihad, sharia and even clothing rules – has fueled fears and contributed to anti-Muslim sentiment all across the country.

The antidote is education. 

Teaching Tolerance has addressed dispelling common stereotypes [3] about Islam in various online resources.

As citizens of this country, it is our duty to ensure that everyone’s rights are honored and respected. These resources will prepare us to do that work.
