Mix It Up

Submitted by Anonymous on 30 October 2010 - 3:05am.

Hi,

My name is Nicholina and I am studying at Macquarie University in Australia to graduate as a primary teacher. As part of this week's research students are asked to have a look at the Teaching Tolerance website, especially the 'Mix it up' section.
I had a look and could not finish up sending you my comment, not because I was told to but because I am so amazed and inspired by the work that is being done within your education environment, that now I cannot wait until I graduate and introduce a similar idea to my future school Area.

In Australia we celebrate Harmony Day but this is not the same as Mix It Up because Harmony day is celebrated in each individual school. Your website has inspired me so much and provided me with a push to 'Take the plunge' as my convener Dr. William DeJean says. Therefore after graduating in 2011 (hopefully), I will be looking forward to teach in a primary school and to extend Harmony Day.

The idea will be to work with my Principal and teacher colleagues to open the school gates to other schools to celebrate Harmony day with us. I am aware that this requires lots of organisation and need to cover the OH&S so that everyone will be safe, but I think that I am ready to take the plunge and give it a go with the back up of all the teachers and principals.

If this works well, the following year I would like to work towards organsing a Harmony Funding day so that hopefully we will be able to invite primary age children who are considered as refugees to celebrate Harmony day with similar age children in our schools.
Can you imagine the amount of new friendships and learning will happen on that day?
Thank you for sharing with us your website as now I can do something about it in our country, Australia.

Kindest Regards
Nicholina McKenna

'Harmony' is Definitely in the Mix!

Hi Nicholina,

We're thrilled to learn that our Mix It Up program has inspired you in Australia.

One of the primary goals of Mix It Up is to create educational communities that promote and sustain harmony, tolerance and respect. It certainly sounds like the Harmony Day fits the bill. Add some elements from Mix, and make it better than ever!

Please feel free to utilize any and all resources you find on the Teaching Tolerance webpage. That's why we created them! We also welcome your feedback.

On a personal note, I consider William DeJean a dear friend. He's an amazing teacher. Please extend my best regards to him.

Kind regards,
Lecia J. Brooks

Resources

Dear Lecia,

Thank you for replying to my message. In one of the assignments students are required to create their own ePortfolio.

I am finding this to be a very good idea as I can excess my work where ever I will be. Since I researched the 'Mix It Up' and also researched about Tollerance, I would like to include my research and your offer of your resources to my eportfolio. Hope that this is acceptable to you.

I am getting close of completing my degree this month and will definetly try my best to utilise the idea of 'Mix It Up' day and create something similar around the community where I will be working.

Kindest Regards
Nicholina
