Jeannie Oakes

Jeannie Oakes is director of Education and Scholarship for the Ford Foundation. Until Fall 2008, she was Presidential Professor in Educational Equity at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also directs UCLA's Institute for Democracy, Education & Access (IDEA), which offers new ways for public research universities to engage urban communities. She is also director of the All Campus Consortium on Research for Diversity (ACCORD), which harnesses the research expertise of researchers the University of California system to promote and support the school achievement, postsecondary choices and life chances of all of the state's diverse children. Oakes' own research focuses on schooling inequalities and follows the progress of educators and activists seeking socially just schools. She is the author of 17 scholarly books including Keeping Track: How Schools Structure Inequality). She is a member of the National Academy of Education.
