Understanding The Influence Of Race
The issues with Understanding the Influence of Race is a sensitive topic because it’s about having an understanding of others about equality and avoiding being bias towards the diversity of children. Although it is sensitive to discuss its importance because race and cultural background does help identify who we are and where we came from. However, many of the professors (in the videos on the Teaching Tolerance Site) have explained that “perceptions, expectations and behaviors” to play when dealing with ethnical decisions or thinking. I was intrigued when I read “without that deeper understanding of their own dispositions, educators will continue to categorize, label, filter and misalign expectations of individual and collective student ability based on race, ethnicity and English language proficiency rather than academic potential” (http://www.tolerance.org/tdsi/uir_racial_bias).
I agree with the section about Persistent Prejudice because it discussed the today’s issue about prejudice. In 2009 was an important year because United States first African American President’s inauguration and it was an incredible moment but for others it was not so good. Race has always been a problem in society because of cultural differences and some ignorance of outside cultural. Although America has changed drastically on laws and rights. the view of race is still going on.
Instead of understanding the person individually, it’s easy automatically assume the stereotypes and the expectations coming from that individual. I can connect with this because being an African American especially when I was a little girl can be difficult in society. Many times I would get false assumptions and labeling as a little girl in school. I never thought I was different from the other kids until teachers and peers pointed it out so then I felt alienated because of the color of my skin. As a teacher, I think it’s important to have the knowledge of different cultures, foreign language and race because it helps to have an understanding of the backgrounds of the students but have an open mind on who they are as individuals.
