Three new ideas:
I can't say that these are entirely new but the survey "The Common Beliefs", did remind me of several critical ideas, here are three.
Differentiation is just good teaching. It is is important to meet the needs of our students. That is not to say that we lower our standards which brings me to point two.
Making assumptions or setting a relatively low bar for groups of students including those of different racial or ethnic backgrounds is detrimintal to any efforts to close the achievement gap. Should we be aware that different students have different needs, yes absolutely. Should we make assumptions about the appearance of our students based on prior knowledge or past experiences, no.
Point three: We should use our knowledge and past experience to form well thought our questions to inquire about our students' needs.
