Going deeper: Influence of Race

Race is an issue that makes me uneasy, nervous. I want to tackle it, become more aware, and relentless and ruthless in finding my own biases. I want to find out what messages I am carrying in my mind that I have inherited from my own upbringing and from "this is the way we do things here". One thing I know: if it isn't honestly dealt with biased words and judgments will come out of my mouth or will pop up in my mind. So I thought that this discussion tool Tolerance.org is offering could be a SAFE place where I can discuss and discover with people where my racial biases are sleeping. I want to wake them up and deal with them.
Is there anybody that wants to start this journey with me?
I am a teacher and work in an inner city school.

Project Implicit

Hi Dado, Count me in.  I related to what you wrote.  Sometimes I feel like I need a mouth filter.  Other times, I wish for an internal prod to nudge me to speak up when I feel reluctant to do so.  Cultivating an equity mindset takes time and commitment.  You are here and that says a lot!
One resource that I use to find out my unconscious biases is Project Implicit.  If you haven't already tried it, then I hope you will.

thank you

thank you Mollie for answering , it is the first time I hear about Project Implicit... I will try it out and reply on it later on.

there are a lot of issues in education that are not as black and white as
society around us wants us to believe. So many gray areas have to be handled
case by case and sometimes it is easier to follow blindly rules and judgments so we don't have to deal with continuous assessments and direction changes.

Internalized biases

Hello, Dada and Mollie,
I work in an inner city school district and the issues of self-esteem are intertwined with perceptions of others. As an African American teacher my goal is to empower our students with confidence. It is not always easy because of my response to their behavior. It would be great if we can have a dialog that I believe will benefit ourselves and our students.
Can you send me the link to Implicit?

Hello, Here is the link to a demonstration of Project Implicit https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo
I hope I got this right.  I wasn't able to copy and paste from another screen.  If you type in Project Implicit on a search engine, it should pop up.
