It has been my honor and privilege to be teaching a high school elective social studies course on diversity for over 10 years, often utilizing materials from SPLC and Teaching Tolerance. I am new to the TDSI component in the last few weeks and I am simply amazed at the wealth of resources and materials available to use in the classroom. So many articles, ideas, classroom activities, school activities to promote the education, understanding, and acceptance of all diversities of our population are available.
My students have the unique privilege of being American and living overseas. They have the opportunity to meet people of other cultures, share their own cultures, and experience life outside of the box of American ideology, yet they demonstrate many of the same stereotypical notions of people as any other group of high school students - partially because we all learn what we live AND most schools do not have room in their curriculums for courses that offer students the chance to become acquainted with multiple view points and learn to express themselves while others actually listen to what they say. With many of the materials here, I have a more focused springboard for many of those challenging conversations and learning opportunities. Thank you!
