I agree with the coach. You will never learn to trust the process until you try it. When I graduated from the Dallas Reading Academy in 1999 I began implementing the Guided reading approach. Used running records to assess the students and I put them in reading groups based on their reading levels. I had used small groups before but my instruction was more systematic. I religiously followed the guidelines. The results were amazing! The sucess with low readers happened over and over. I gained confidence in the process. If students are taught on their instructional level using a systematic process, they will read. The same is true with discipline. Once a sysmatic discline management plan is implemented conduct will change. I should add that Irvin mentioned an essential element of teaching. We teach human beings with human need and those needs are a part of all culture. A simple smile wiill go a long way towards presenting yourself as a caring person to a child.
