My
thinking about the case did change some. Initially, I thought that most of the
comments people made about Hillary’s case were disheartening and not very
encouraging, but I think I was right in my thinking that Hillary was afraid to
discuss race with a class full of African-American students. After reading the
plethora of information about culturally relevant pedagogy, culturally relevant
strategies that enhance literacy teaching and learning in secondary classrooms,
and culturally responsive teaching, I learned many ways in which Hillary could
help her students become engaged in the text without feeling like she was doing
something wrong.
