| Why I feel this way | Leaders continuously challenge teachers to differentiate instruction, accommodate for students with IEPs, and directly instruct those who are struggling. Leaders have also put into place an RtI program that facilitates the support systems needed for struggling students. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders of my building are not genuine in their communication as they often forget the topics discussed. Additionally, they can be unprofessional in conversation by talking poorly about other teachers to other staff members. They encourage others to take on the role of "mentor" to less comfortable or vulnerable teachers so they don't have to claim responsibility for that action. |
| Why I feel this way | I am going to disagree, but this was a tough question to answer. My school leaders pay careful attention to racial and ethnic groups in terms of paperwork, not justice. For example, they want to increase numbers of minority students in advanced math classes, they want to lower the number of minority students with discipline referrals, and they want to increase the amount of support to ELL students. However I don't believe the reasoning behind these objectives is to achieve social justice, but conversely is to look better on paper and not have to answer to the state when our numbers are questioned. |
| Why I feel this way | My school leaders are constantly pushing collaboration. We have different groups that we meet with regularly to collaborate. The school has also provided training for teacher leaders to be more effective in facilitating true collaboration during these times. |
| Why I feel this way | I would say that we lack conversation and dialogue regarding this topic, at least in relation to improving intercultural understanding. There are many conversations that go on in our building, but are more geared towards the act of playing the blame game for the failure of minority students. |
| Why I feel this way | I am going to disagree with this statement because since I have been employed in my building, this has never been an open goal of our school leaders. |

| Why I feel this way | Sadly this isn't the case in many schools across the map..strictly speaking for Illinois alone, we don't always see school leaders regularly reinforcing that all students achieve at high levels. |
| Why I feel this way | If they are a true leader, then yes, they should at all ties be interacting respectfully with all their faculty members. They should always encourage input from the people who may feel less comfortable. |
| Why I feel this way | I can't really say this is true for all because I've rarely seen school leaders doing both simultaneously. The extent of acknowledging differences among racial and ethnic groups goes only as far as talking about it a little, then dismissing the issue at hand. |
| Why I feel this way | This is kind of a "given" to say the least. Just because someone is "dubbed" a leader, doesn't mean they aren't supposed to work with groups. A leader is a chameleon, someone who can work independently as well as with others. By showing they can work successfully with a group, they are setting an example for others. |
| Why I feel this way | I wish this was the case with every school leader. This issue should be made one of school leaders' top priorities for teachers and students. With the improvement of interracial and intercultural understanding comes a better education and healthier relationships. |
| Why I feel this way | Cases like these often get dismissed and it's not right. The source of the conflict needs to be addressed and resolved. Issues like these don't just occur once, but if ignored it will surely turn into something greater and a school leader need sto always be prepared to tackle such issues. |

| Why I feel this way | Research and practical experience has showed me that there is no single factor more important to student success than high teacher expectations. When teachers and leadership BELIEVE that all students can succeed at high levels, students themselves are more likely to believe it and perform at those levels. |
| Why I feel this way | "Interaction" is essential to effective leadership at any level. Engaging those who are less likely to support and/or believe in equity goals will help bring them along. Staff that have experienced inequity or are feeling isolated based on equity issues need site leaders to support and engage them in solution oriented problem solving. |
| Why I feel this way | Leaders cannot maximize their resources if they do not know what they are. Each individual brings something different to the table but can ofter come together to establish and/or work on common goals. |
| Why I feel this way | GOOD leaders, EFFECTIVE leaders do this - not all leaders. This is often a consciously developed skill that requires time and energy. This is where bringing in a descenter or nonbeliever can be a double edged sword - keep your friends close but keep you "enemies" closer. |
| Why I feel this way | I don't know...just seems to follow! |
| Why I feel this way | I strongly agree that they should...again the challenge of identifying the "root cause" and having the boldness and skill to address it. I suspect it does not happen as much as I might like to hope. |

| Why I feel this way | As is occurs nearly daily at my campus. |
| Why I feel this way | Leaders do an exceptional job of this, even when faculty goes out of their way to be hurtful or resistent. |
| Why I feel this way | The emphasis is more so on common values than race. |
| Why I feel this way | Reinforcement is for comraderie, not for race relations. I think we all treat each other as professionals. |
| Why I feel this way | Intercultural is more of a priority at this time, in my opinion. Leaders stress competency in all areas and do not single out race or culture. |
| Why I feel this way | This is more prominent with students as it can escalate quickly. I have not had experience with this at the faculty level. |

| Why I feel this way | I answered "neither agree nor disagree" because there is no "occasionally" option to select. I wouln't say this is encouraged, nor is it ignored. We do want our students to succeed, but we do not have the pressure to meet state standards. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders of my school are very personable. They are comfortable talking with children, families, and teachers. They are able to see strengths, weaknesses, and character traits quickly. They encourage us to reflect on our teaching so that we may become more confident. |
| Why I feel this way | I haven't seen this happen, but it is something the leaders of my school would do. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders at my school are always encouraging us to get our students to work together. Not only does this help students achieve more academically, but it also decreases behavioral problems when students know each other better. |
| Why I feel this way | Our leaders have not made it clear that intercultural understanding is the base for improving teaching and learning. It has not been emphasized when we discuss those improvements. |
| Why I feel this way | Whenever we have any kind of incident amoung our students, we bring it to the attention of our school leaders promptly. They help us address the situation in a quickly and effective mannor. |

| Why I feel this way | This statement applies to my imaginary school except they don't expect every child to be performing at the single highest level. They look at where they are and what is reasonable to expect each child to grow during the year and aim for that. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders at my imaginary school are very good at checking in with teachers to see how they are doing and support them in any qualms they may have. |
| Why I feel this way | The school leaders in my imaginary school work to help each racial and ethnic group realize that they are special, unique, and recognize their wonderful qualities while also demonstrating the similarities between everyone. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders at this imaginary school collaborate together to bring these values to life and also work with teachers and students. They develop strong support systems where they are supported by others and also support others. |

| Why I feel this way | Not sure if this happens, but I would imagine that it does especially in urban schools that offer greater diversity. |
| Why I feel this way | I feel this would take too much energy and time to understand the root cause of racial and ethnic conflict among faculty or students. So the surface may be scratched, but I don't know if the root problem is really dealt with. |

| Why I feel this way | School leaders should reinforce the concept that everyone should be trying their best at whatever they do. |
| Why I feel this way | It is important for leaders to treat everyone with respect and build a good school community. |
| Why I feel this way | Leaders should bring together the common values among the different ethnic groups. This will enhance the school community. |
| Why I feel this way | Collaboration between different groups is important if you want to be well rounded in your teaching. |
| Why I feel this way | To be an effective teacher I believe that you must understand different cultures of the school. |
| Why I feel this way | Although I believe school leaders should try to figure out the root causes of racial and ethnic conflict within a school I also think it is everyone's job. All of the teachers need to take it upon themselves to understand where the conflict is coming from and find effective ways of fixing it. |

| Why I feel this way | But only to the extent that it is understood that the extra attention can sometimes make things worse. |
| Why I feel this way | I don't like the word acknowledge here....I would rather it say 'embrace' |
| Why I feel this way | Not just culturally, but by ability as well. |
| Why I feel this way | I feel sometimes like there is too much of a focus on our differences. I think more of a focus should be on embracing differences when we encounter them rather than looking for them to address. |

| Why I feel this way | I think that it takes a leader who is willing to push their students to make them succeed to have a successful turn out. Test scores are one big thing that determines if the school is performing at high levels. |
| Why I feel this way | It is the leaders job to make everyone feel welcome and accepted. |
| Why I feel this way | I think it is probably hard to do both of those things simultaneously but if one can pull it off, then they are pretty amazing. It is difficult enough to acknowledge racial/ethnic differences and get everyone to accept them. Let alone to encourage values to the whole student body. Morals and values have gone so down hill since back in the day. |
| Why I feel this way | It is all up to the leader to get the group to come together as one. |
| Why I feel this way | It is hard to ensure something so unpredictable. Yes their efforts can be better but the results are a mystery. |
| Why I feel this way | Once they find the source of the conflict, then solving it will be a lot easier. |

| Why I feel this way | Our leader is always talking about the individual capacity of each child. While we don't directly talk about ethnic differences and race, she truly believes in the potential of each child. |
| Why I feel this way | Our owner is very wonderful, and when she is around she makes everyone feel as though they are very special. . our directress on the other hand, can be awkward herself, so has a difficult time making anyone feel comfortable, especially those who may already feel vulnerable. |
| Why I feel this way | I would say that they acknowledge the differences, and encourage common values, but don't adequately relate that they appreciate those differences. |
| Why I feel this way | i feel that they would talk about this if they realized that they needed to - but as you can see from previous entries. . . we don't talk about this. |
| Why I feel this way | Again the same, but I think they would use the colorblind line... |
| Why I feel this way | Some of our main discipline issues seem to always be with african american students. I have always wondered why and what is it that we are obviously missing? I have always thought that there is something that we are missing because these things should not be so obvious. . it is a cultural difference but is it the culture of the classroom that is be the issue? |

| Why I feel this way | I think school leaders should regularly reinforce the importance of ensuring that all students achieve at high levels because it not only affects funding, but assesses the quality of education the students are receiving. By reinforcing this importance and doing things such as sit-in observations in classrooms, the school leaders will be able to get an idea of how the teachers are relaying these high expectations. |
| Why I feel this way | I think that this is a great way for colleagues to get to know each other so that relationships are built and there are people to go to for help in the school community. |

| Why I feel this way | While as a school leader I espouse the value of high achievement for all students, I feel that I have not been able to put my finger on the sense and root of apathy and mediocrity that seems to be creeping in...and the feeling from students that school achievement is not important. |
| Why I feel this way | Although there is outward respect, there is a definite underlying agenda of fitting in with the mainstream. Teachers or specialists who have been on our staff who may be outliers may be expected to take on the school norms and culture and refrain from trying new approaches. My desire is to give everyone on our staff a chance to highlight their particular strengths and talents. It is unfortunate that we do not have the time built in, particularly due to budget that addresses staff development that could build our sense of understanding of each other. |
| Why I feel this way | Teachers are involved in teaching this through the social science curriculum at our schoo, but there is always more that could be done. Field trips and projects are so important to us because they get our students out into the world to experience more diversity than what we are exposed to in our small, rural school. A yearly leadership conference that the middle school students attend highlight the recognitions of common values. |
| Why I feel this way | Again, more could be done. Budget limits inviting speakers, etc. to give assemblies. By virtue of the prevalance of a strong lesbian community within our area, students interact with these women as role models. |

| Choose one: School leaders assert and regularly reinforce the importance of ensuring that all students achieve at high levels. | 1 |
| Choose one: Leaders interact respectfully with all faculty members and make a special effort to engage those who may feel less comfortable or more vulnerable. | 1 |
| Choose one: School leaders acknowledge differences among racial and ethnic groups at the same time that they encourage recognition of common values. | 1 |

| Choose one: School leaders take prompt action to understand and deal with the root causes of racial and ethnic conflict among faculty or students. | 1 |
| Why I feel this way | Leaders have a responsibility to raise the achievement of all students; this is the essential leadership charge for K12 administrators; this is the core of meaningful schooling; it is the vehicle through which leaders support the work of all teachers and other staff members. |
| Why I feel this way | Leaders are separated from students by one group: faculty members. Leaders usually don't exert direct influence on students, by they do exert influence on teachers and staff. By managing resources, providing professional development opportunities, carefully and frequently observing instructional activity and providing feedback regarding such, leaders give support to student achievement via support to faculty. |
| Why I feel this way | Each individual brings a self to the learning environment that reflects the influence of groups he or she has been raised in. The differences among groups are often identifiable, although how these differences interact with the individual's experience is complex, but often are the basis for personality and creative uniqueness. All groups, being human, also share many commonalities: different languages exist, but all humans have at least one language that is part of their daily experience they share with others. |
| Why I feel this way | In much the same way that students bring the individual and group self into the school, teachers and parents and others related to the school bring the individual and group combination into the learning environment. By working together, the individual strengths become generative in moving concepts, skills, and attitudes to a different place for each participant. |
| Why I feel this way | The more that can be uncovered about others' backgrounds, the more effective all can become as teaching and learning approaches are adapted and expanded. |
| Why I feel this way | Conflicts exist and unattended can become larger. Prompt action to understand, interpret, investigate, alleviate, build on, problem-solve can create a proactive climate that lessens the negative influences of conflict on teaching and learning. |

| Why I feel this way | I think that school leaders are addressing achievement gaps, but not some of the underlying issues. |
| Why I feel this way | I don't think that the principal in my school has the capacity to engage in effective communication with staff. |
| Why I feel this way | I don't think that leaders in my school even often address race or diversity. |
| Why I feel this way | I think that my school in name is moving towards a plc model, but have yet to show or train teachers how to effectively collaborate. |
| Why I feel this way | The only training that has overtly addressed this is Ruby Payne's model in any training that we have had. |
| Why I feel this way | I think that school leaders often ignore these issues. For example, an issue arose two years ago where a portion of African American students had ongoing disputes with a group of Hispanic students who had recently moved to the district. Students who fought were suspended, but the real issues of race and ethnicity were never addressed. |

I also agree that these components are necessary for teaching and learning. |

| Why I feel this way | Teachers & Administration often use data and achievement to drive teaching. It seems to be a priority in some areas, but may be inconsistent and not always used as much as it should be. |
| Why I feel this way | We see respectful interactions, however we are uncertain of how those who may feel less comfortable or more vulnerable feel. We do feel some separation between licensed and non-licensed staff. |
| Why I feel this way | It is inconsistent at this point. We aren't all sure how to acknowledge all cultures without offending others. We see the Latino culture very present, but others not so much. It seems that we know there is a problem, but are not yet doing anything to fix it. |
| Why I feel this way | EL & Special education teachers work together with classroom teachers. There is little interdisciplinary collaboration. |
| Why I feel this way | We have awareness of this, but there is not a plan in place currently. |
| Why I feel this way | The action isn't always prompt. It also seems like there is a lot of reactive instead of proactive actions. |

| Why I feel this way | The school leaders at my school are all about student achievement and are regularly checking in with teachers to make sure that they are able to reach students and give help and assistance whenever they can. They understand that "high achievement" is not the same for every student but they are commited to making sure that every student is challenged and that every student achieve at a high level. |
| Why I feel this way | I have a very comfortable working relationship with my school leaders. I always feel that I can speak with them and never feel uncomfortable bringing up an issue or a concern. I feel that my school leaders always have the best interests of the faculty and students in mind and i feel very lucky to be in the situation that I am in at my school. |
| Why I feel this way | The leaders at my school are aware that there are many different ithnic groups and races present in our school and although they understand that each group is different, they know that all groups bring positive interaction into our school. We are a catholic school and the students who come to our school understand, that no matter who they are or where they come from, our school is a place where they can come and feel safe and cared for and challenged bacause that is the goal of our school. |
| Why I feel this way | It is very important for the staff at my school to communicate effectively and be able to collaborate with not only each other but with the students from any class. We do activities where members of different classes will come and to our classroom and do an art project or a service project and this seems to be a good way for members of different groups and classes to get to know each other and to branch out from their norms. |
| Why I feel this way | As a school we are working on different ways to get out into the community more and to understand the cultures of people who are differnet from oursleves. the leaders in the building make sure that each class has a chance to meet with a speaker to understand a little bit more about multiple cultures in our community. |
| Why I feel this way | I have not seen any conflicts based on race and ethnicity since i have been at my school although i am confident that if these kinds of conflicts were to occur they would be handle swiftly by our school leaders and that the leaders would try to understand every aspect of the problem so they could inform us what happened and why. |
