How is the diversity of the student body represented in the trophy cases, student work, poster boards and other public places and classrooms? More important, what is the message these representations communicate? It is important in depicting the heritage of different groups to avoid stereotyping that uses "traditional" characterizations and to encompass contemporary experiences and achievements. Beyond such displays, is the school's racial and ethnic diversity evident in instructional groups, special programs and extracurricular activities?
Linda Darling-Hammond has found that the commitment of a school to ensuring that racially and ethnically diverse students succeed will be reflected in many readily observable school characteristics.
