Professional Expertise

The most powerful school-related influence on student learning is the quality of teaching students experience. Schools influence the quality of teaching in three main ways: the recruitment and selection of teachers, the opportunities they provide teachers to enhance their expertise, and the conditions they provide to support effective teaching and student learning.

This section of the survey deals with two aspects of professional development that focus significantly on diversity in an on-going way: (1) the characteristics of professional development practices (e.g., driven by systematic, data based analysis of differences in student learning) and (2) whether content directly addresses potential difficulties teachers often confront in effectively teaching racially and ethnically diverse students.
