Sharing your stories is a powerful way to connect with others who are breaking down barriers and increasing understanding and respect in their schools.
Tell us your story and hear from other student activists who are working for change in their school communities. Mix It Up publishes stories by and about students, as well as tips and ideas to support activist efforts.
Write from your personal experiences about social boundaries. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Identify the social boundaries in your school or community.
- What was it like when you felt excluded or included?
- Your experience with excluding or including someone
- How is your school or community Mixing It Up!
Submit your essay or poem to Mix It Up. If your work is published, you get:
- $50 cash;
- $100 gift card from BarnesandNoble.com; or
- $50 donation to the charity of your choice.
There are just a few rules ...
- We're looking for 500-750 words.
- Include your name and e-mail address.
- Choose your words wisely. Slurs and profanity don't necessarily make the story better.
- We need parent/guardian permission if you're under 18. We'll send you a form if your submission is selected. Just fill it out and send it back, even if you get published anonymously or under a screen name.
If you have questions, call us at (334) 956-8200 or go ahead and send us your story.

If snail mail is your thing, send your story (with return address) to:
