Racial Representation in the Media

The media is clearly powerful in shaping public sentiment and attitude. This, coupled with the fact that stereotypes are also significantly biased toward negatively depicting minorities such as the Arab, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black and Latinx populations, has dire implications, especially for vulnerable children and teenagers who consume media most and who are particularly absorbent to its messages. It is important, therefore, to unveil the pervasiveness of stereotypes, train students to recognize them, and give them tools to feel empowered to make changes. How does this bias take form, what does it look like, and how can we change it?
