Re-igniting the Passion to Teach

A web exclusive for "Dancing with Languages," from the September 2008 issue of Teaching Tolerance magazine.

Reflecting on Practice

What can you do to bring back that spark to teaching?

  1. Integrate what you are most passionate about within your present curriculum. You will find that the more motivated you are to teach, the more motivated your students will be to learn.
  2. Reduce the isolation of the four walls of the classroom. Seek out others who have similar beliefs and intentions for the students in their classrooms. Exchange ideas and collaborate in instructional planning.
  3. Re-examine your vocation. Ask yourself, "Why did I enter the teaching profession?" Realize that what you want for students goes beyond test scores. Tap into the energy of those initial thoughts and feelings.
  4. Bring novelty into the classroom. Break from the regular routine once in a while. Be daring. Have the students be the teacher for the day. Surprise students. Blast music from a boom box or wear something unusual to get their attention and bring a smile to their faces.
  5. Closely observe the attitudes and behaviors of students and celebrate the accomplishments, no matter how small. A child's smile from words of encouragement is the fuel that will fill up your spirit.
  6. Go out and be recognized! Share what you are doing with others. You may be the catalyst for re-energizing someone else.
