“Negro Hero” is a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks published in 1945. The subject of Brooks’ poem was Dorie Miller, a mess attendant in the U.S. Navy at the start of World War II. Miller received the Navy Cross for his bravery during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor when he saved several shipmates, including his captain, as well as ably manned a machine gun he had not been trained to use. He went missing in action in 1943.
