This formative evaluation, conducted by Shuster Consulting, reports on the results of a curriculum pilot during which Perspectives for a Diverse America, Teaching Tolerance's literacy-based anti-bias curriculum, was implemented in select Hawai'i schools.
This report documents the results of a five-phase study designed to answer the following questions:
- Did the scope and nature of the Perspectives curriculum meet teachers' needs?
- How do teachers use Perspectives' Common Core aligned texts and strategies?
- What effects of using Perspectives did teachers see in their classrooms?
Taken as a whole, these case studies show what Perspectives looks like in classrooms. They also show how the curriculum achieves effects like text-generated empathy, collaboration for collective action, reduced bias and improved literacy skills.
