Report on Draft Program (found in Atlanta’s Black Paper, August 25, 1966)

In this report on a group of peaceful draft protesters outside of an induction center, the violent actions of both military personnel and police officers (including two Black officers) are described, including spitting, dumping liquid and throwing lit cigarettes from second- and third-floor windows of the building. The police arrested several protesters and beat them while in jail. The report turns to the efforts to raise money to get the protesters out of jail. The report also highlights the counter-protesters made up of “white racists” who yelled offensive rhetoric including racial slurs. The white police officers also insulted the Black women demonstrators in front of the two Black police officers who just laughed along.
