Punishment for Escape

Some enslaved people made plans to escape and free themselves, but this was risky and often very dangerous. Enslavers had many more resources (including weapons and laws that allowed them to hurt the people they enslaved) than those trying to escape. Enslavers used those resources to put down rebellions and punish people who tried to escape.
